Texas has signed a new law requiring Apple and Google to verify all app store users ages before they can download or purchase anything on the app stores.
Any user under the age of 18 will now have to get their parents permission to use the app store. A similar law was passed in Utah earlier this year setting the precedent for this type of legislation. Several other states have introduced similar bills and there’s even a bill floating around Washington D.C. that would federally mandate it.
Apple CEO Tim Cook actually reached out to Texas Governor Greg Abbott earlier this year — urging him not sign the bill. Clearly Abbott didn’t listen to Cook.
